Cash Flow
Modelling

With the guidance and insight of your Financial Planner, cash flow modelling can be a key element of your financial planning review – and how you move forward towards your life goals.

What is Cash Flow Modelling?

Cash flow modelling is a financial planning tool that provides a complete overview of your finances. It involves forecasting future cash flows over a specific period to understand how money will move in and out over time. Working with a financial planner enables you to answer any questions around cash flow modelling, such as “will I have enough money to retire?”, or “will I run out of money in later life?”

How Cash Flow Modelling Works

The first step in cash flow modelling is collecting financial data. This includes your income sources, fixed and variable expenses, any debts, assets, and other relevant financial details.

Once data is gathered, your financial planner will create a model that outlines expected cash inflows and outflows over a defined period. This period can range from months to years depending on your needs.

The model projects future financial scenarios based on historical data and known future events. This can include income from salaries, investments, and other sources, as well as expenses like mortgage payments, rent, utilities, and other expenditures.

Your financial planner will analyse the model to identify trends and potential risks. This can help in determining the stability and sustainability of the cash flow.
They may then also create various scenarios within the model to show the impact of different financial decisions. For example, they might model the effects of you retiring early, buying a new property, gifting to family or requiring care in old age.

Based on the analysis, adjustments can be made to the model to achieve your specific financial goals. This might include adjusting spending habits, increasing savings, or revising your investment strategy, or putting in place a decumulation plan.

The baseline is the position pre advice. Here an example client is accumulating wealth which they are never forecasted to spend, and which will be subject to IHT on death.

This gift graph is where an example client has taken advice to make a gift now to family. Here they are still forecast to retain enough wealth to last their lifetimes.

Uses of Cash Flow Modelling

Cash flow modelling helps to create a realistic budget for you by providing a clear picture of your income and expenses. By projecting future cash flows, you can make informed decisions about investing your surplus income.

Cash flow modelling is crucial for planning retirement by estimating future income needs and ensuring sufficient savings.

For businesses, cash flow modelling aids in assessing operational sustainability and identifying the best times to make investments.

Limits of a Cash Flow Model

Although a very useful tool it does have its limitations. It cannot predict the future with absolute certainty. Your circumstances, your income and expenditure may change. It does not include non-cash transactions such as depreciation, or changes in asset values. The cash flow forecast must be regularly updated to maintain accuracy and projections should be modified to reflect significant changes when they occur.

How a Financial Planner Can Help

Financial planners have the knowledge and experience to interpret cash flow data accurately. They can identify patterns and make recommendations based on their expertise.

Planners can create personalised cash flow models tailored to your specific circumstances and goals, while being a third party can provide a fresh perspective and unbiased advice, helping you make more rational decisions.

Financial planners can assist you in setting realistic financial goals and regularly monitor progress toward these goals. They can also help you explore different financial scenarios and their potential impacts, aiding in better decision-making.

Your planner can identify financial risks and help you to create contingency plans to mitigate these risks. They can also offer ongoing support and adjustments to cash flow models as your circumstances change over time.

Cash flow modelling is a powerful tool for you to manage finances effectively.

By providing a clear and detailed view of how money moves in and out, it allows for informed decision-making and strategic planning.

Financial planners play a key role in guiding you through the cash flow modelling process, offering expert analysis and personalised recommendations. By utilising cash flow modelling and the expertise of a financial planner, you can be better equipped to achieve their your financial goals and maintain stability over the long term.

Investing comes with risk, the value of your investments and any income derived from them can fall as well as rise. Forecasts are not a reliable indicator of future performance.
