The biggest questions we’re asked about retirement:
When can I access my pension?
Most pensions can currently be accessed from age 55, rising to 57 from April 2028. This can vary depending on the type of pension you hold and future legislation.
How much will I need to retire comfortably?
This depends on the lifestyle you want in retirement and when you plan to retire. At Attivo, we use cashflow modelling to help you understand what your retirement could look like and whether your plans are on track.
How much could my pension pay me each year?
The income your pension could provide depends on its value, how it is invested, and how you choose to take benefits. We help you understand sustainable income options based on your circumstances.
Can I take tax-free cash from my pension?
In many cases, yes. Most people can usually take up to 25% of their pension as tax-free cash when they start accessing it. How and when you take this can significantly affect your longer-term income.
What tax will I pay when withdrawing from my pension?
While up to 25% is usually tax-free, the remainder is generally taxed as income. The amount of tax you pay will depend on your total income and prevailing tax rules.
What are my options for taking an income in retirement?
Your options may include flexi-access drawdown, annuities, or taking income from workplace pensions such as defined benefit (DB) or defined contribution (DC) schemes. Each provides different levels of flexibility and certainty, depending on the type of scheme and your priorities.
What is an annuity compared to drawdown?
With an annuity (for example, a lifetime annuity), you exchange some or all of your pension for a regular income, which can provide a level of certainty. Drawdown allows your pension to remain invested and gives you more flexibility over how and when you take income, although this can vary over time. The most suitable approach will depend on your goals, health and attitude to risk.
How does my pension work alongside the State Pension?
Your personal and workplace pensions are paid in addition to any State Pension you are entitled to. We help you understand how these income sources fit together.
