Are you really ready to retire? Find out with our pension calculator

For many people, retirement is something to “think about later”.

Whether that’s planning how you want to spend your time or how you’ll manage any unexpected twists and turns along the way, understanding what your future income could look like early on will give you more choices in the long run.

A pension calculator can be a useful first step to knowing whether you’re ready to retire. In short, it can provide a clearer picture of where you stand today and whether your current pension savings are likely to support the lifestyle you want in the future.

Introducing the Attivo pension calculator

Our pension calculator asks a few simple questions, including your target retirement age, how much income you think you will need each year, your current pension and investment value, and your monthly contributions.

Based on these figures, it shows whether you may be ahead of target, on target or behind target. It is a quick way to sense check your progress and start thinking more seriously about whether you are truly ready to retire.

While the calculator has its limitations and cannot provide a perfect prediction or any guarantees (for example, it doesn’t take inflation, tax, or changes to legislation into account), it can help you spot potential gaps.

You may find that your expected retirement income is lower than you hoped, that you need to increase contributions, or that you may want to review when you plan to stop working. Equally, the results may simply offer a useful indication that your savings are broadly aligned with your current retirement goals.

Either way, it is helpful information if you want to know how ready to retire you really are.

A calculator is a starting point, not the whole plan

As useful as online tools can be, they do have limits. Our own calculator is based on illustrative assumptions and does not take account of inflation, tax or future changes to legislation.

This matters because retirement planning is about more than reaching a number; you also need to think about when you can access different pensions, what role your State Pension will play, and how much flexibility you want in later life.

With £31.1 billion pensions currently unclaimed in the UK, it’s also important to bring any potential “lost” pensions you may have into consideration.

Being ready for retirement often means looking at the bigger picture, starting with questions such as:

  • Will my income cover everyday spending as well as one-off goals such as travel, home improvements or helping family members?
  • How might rising living costs affect my plans over time?
  • When will I become eligible for my State Pension? (This is currently under review and rising from age 66 to 67 between April 2026 and April 2028).

These are all important questions if you want confidence that you are ready to retire. We also have a handy pre-retirement checklist available here with further ideas, should you need them.

What to do next if your results raise questions

If the calculator suggests a shortfall…

…this doesn’t necessarily mean your plans are off track for good. Small changes made early can have a meaningful impact over time, whether that means increasing contributions, reviewing investments or adjusting your retirement date. A conversation with a Lifestyle Financial Planner can help you understand what those figures mean in the context of your wider goals and identify practical next steps. If your results look encouraging…

…this can still be a useful prompt to review your wider financial plan. Retirement planning is about more than your pension – it may also involve how you draw income tax-efficiently, how your investments are structured, and how your plans fit with wider considerations such as estate planning and inheritance tax. Speaking to a Lifestyle Financial Planner can help you explore whether your retirement plans are aligned with the bigger picture.

Whatever your result, a conversation with a Lifestyle Financial Planner can help you turn those figures into a more complete retirement plan.

Important information

A pension is a long-term investment. The value of investments can go down as well as up and you may get back less than you originally invested. Your eventual retirement income may depend on the size of your pension fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.
