ATTIVO

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

At Attivo, we are committed to cultivating a workplace culture that values the well-being of our employees.

We recently appointed four dedicated Mental Health First Aiders within Attivo, who will play a vital role in promoting mental health awareness and provide initial support to colleagues experiencing mental health challenges.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the theme this year is movement. We’re firm believers of how much exercise can contribute to a positive mindset; but it won’t be this factor alone.

We spoke to our Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA), who have each undergone extensive training in order to carry this responsibility, to learn more about them, their background, why they put themselves forward for the role, and their advice for managing a positive mindset.

Andy Williams, Financial Planner

Why did you decide to become a Mental Health First Aider?

I was in the military from 2008 to 2013 and have seen and experienced first hand how easily things can fall apart if you do not carry out practises that maintain good mental health. I have seen the benefits of the right support provided early, and am aware of how things can develop if early help isn’t on hand or doesn’t seem to be available.

Why is this important to you?

I know that we all need support or at the very least someone to talk to. If this is available it could mean someone doesn’t make a bad decision while in a bad but temporary mental state, or is left suffering when a short conversation could provide relief.

Also, someone in a bad mental state is detrimental to themselves and those around them, while the reverse is true for someone in a good mental state.

How do you see the role developing?

Provision of an in- and out-of-work contact that anyone in the business can call and get through to an on duty MHFA who can provide initial support and signposting if necessary. Posters with contacts around offices in communal areas.

What tips would you give to look after your mental health?

When I was younger, I thought that if you ate right and trained hard you would be healthy; then I discovered the impact of social interactions and their lack on mental and overall health. Strengthen relationships you already and be open to building new relationships.

Nicky Jamieson, Head of HR

Why did you decide to become a Mental Health First Aider?

I believe in the importance of supporting mental health in Attivo. I wanted to equip myself with the skills and knowledge to effectively assist individuals who may be experiencing mental health challenges.

Why is this important to you?

I understand the impact it has on overall well-being and quality of life. Everyone deserves access to support and understanding when facing mental health issues, and being a Mental Health First Aider allows me to contribute positively to that support system.

How do you see the role developing?

Just as physical first aid is widely understood and practiced, I envision mental health first aid becoming similarly recognised and accessible. This may involve increased training opportunities, destigmatisation of mental health issues, and greater community support networks.

What tips would you give to look after your mental health?
  • Prioritise Self-Care: Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading, walking, or listening to music.
  • Nature Walks: Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and promote mental clarity.

Sarah Jones, Personal Assistant

Why did you decide to become a Mental Health First Aider?

Mental health is often seen as a subject that we can’t talk about. Having seen the aftermath of how devastating the lack of support can have on individuals and their families, this is the driving factor behind why I wanted to become a MHFA.

Why is this important to you?

If we had a cough or cold that developed or turned into something serious we would go and see a doctor. But when it comes to mental health, the stigmas surrounding it stop us from talking about how we are truly feeling. I’m a firm believer of “a problem shared is a problem halved”.

Jenny Jones, Allocations Manager

Why did you decide to become a Mental Health First Aider?

I have had some experience in the past of witnessing how poor mental health can affect you, and since then have had a passion for helping people and offering guidance.

Why is this important to you?

The best part of your day is spent within the work environment and sometimes situations can feel overwhelming; therefore, it is important that employees know there is someone who they can turn to and discuss matters in a safe confidential space and receive the appropriate help without judgement.

We’re so grateful to all our employees who have stepped up into this role, and will be supporting them on their journey.
